About the Academy

The Tennessee Academy of Dental Hygiene was established in 1986 in order to provide aid to those pursuing careers in dental hygiene.
The Academy not only provides scholarship funds for those seeking new careers in dental hygiene but also those dental hygienists who wish to further their careers by pursuing Baccalaureate, Masters, or Doctorate degrees in dental hygiene.

From the President’s Desk
Dear Tennessee Academy Members:
Happy New Year!!!
I trust everyone survived the holidays and can now begin this new year with anticipation for good things to come! One of those good things is our annual CE this February in beautiful Pigeon Forge.  We really need your support for our organization to continue to provide scholarships for those wishing to pursue or further a career in our dental hygiene profession.  Because we are a non-profit  organization and must raise funds from which to award those scholarships, we are providing this year’s CE at a minimal cost of just $40.00, especially considering the caliber of guest speaker we are blessed to have!  This event is such a great way to earn 4CE’s while enjoying the beauty of the mountains.  Think of it as a mini weekend retreat and come join us!
The CE will be held on February 18th in Pigeon Forge at the Oak Tree Lodge Convention Center.  We are especially thrilled to have Dr. Mike Tabor from Knoxville, Tn to speak for us regarding forensic dental identification, the Body Farm work in Knoxville, his experiences at ground zero, child abuse cases, and BiteMark cases.
Dr. Tabor has entitled his lecture: “Dead Men Talking: true tales that their teeth have told”.  Dr. Tabor has served as the chief  forensic dentist for the Tennessee State Medical Examiner’s Office since 1983. He will share with us many fascinating stories from his case files and give a sneak preview to his soon to be released book “They Call Him Andrew”.  Dr. Tabor has worked extensively with Dr. Bill Bass at the Knoxville Body Farm and will share many cases where the two disciplines (dental and anthropology) have worked together to solve crimes. In addition to the ID cases, Dr. Tabor will also give us some ‘behind the scenes’ information on his experiences working at ground zero following the 9-11 attack in New York City.  He will also give a brief discussion of bitemark evidence, involving his very first case in Tennessee history where bitemark evidence was admitted into court of law.  Firsthand stories involving the Ted Bundy case and its impact on forensic science will highlight this very interesting and controversial subject!  You absolutely DO NOT want to miss this phenomenal lecture so mark your calendars now!
For those wanting to reserve a room for Friday night the rates are:  $50 + tax.  When registering for a group rate please indicate you are with the Tennessee Dental Hygiene Group or Tennessee Academy.
There will be a board meeting (open to all members) on Friday from 3-5pm EST at the convention center.  On Friday night for those that can make it early we will meet at the hotel around 6:00 pm EST and go to dinner at Applebee’s around 6:30 EST.
Please RSVP by February 13th your name, # of guests, your email address, and if you are an Academy member.  This will enable us to know how many handouts we need to prepare.  Also it would greatly help our efforts if you could mail your membership applications at least 2 weeks (Feb.6th) before the class so we can hand out your certificates there and save on the cost of postage. They need to be sent to our secretary Carolyn Rand at PO Box 3  Apison, TN 37302.  Her email is mobettarand@aol.com.
We are looking forward to seeing you and are especially excited about our speaker. Please join us for one of the best CE’s you’ve experienced!  Please visit our website for further information regarding the Academy and check us out on Facebook!
Sincerely,
Crystal Brazelton, RDH
